Losing myself in the painting's detail, I felt the same time-travel thrill I'd often experienced when gazing at Civil War photographs. The result was a historical reconstruction that gave the scene a documentary quality, about as close to the original moment as it was possible to get. Not that Horwitz doesn't paint pictures well with his words, but some of the scenes still cried out for a photograph. The only drawback is the lack of illustrations and/or pictures. Horwitz flips back and forth between his experiences in the Captain's footsteps and the words of Cook or the words of those who were Cook's companions. Blue Latitudes is a rather long book because Horwitz literally goes just about everywhere that Cook went on his three voyages, and the reader is treated to Cook's adventures as well as Horwitz's. Horwitz's sidekick along most of the way is the usually drunk, and always sarcastic, Roger. In this humorous, educational, and perceptive historical travelogue, Horwitz "boldly goes where Captain Cook has gone before." Readers will find this account informative and entertaining from the first page to the last. But really it’s just the start, for when Kitty discovers and then actively joins the Suffragists, her health and life are both transformed-though Richard grows only the more angry and disapproving at the folly and impropriety of it all. When Kitty withdraws from him sexually, the germ of plot-trouble is sown-and would seem to be reaped when Kitty’s single fling brings her the need of a secret abortion that’s followed by long, deep depression and dire health. But under the surface is what matters-fulfillment, self-expression, dynamism, sex-and that’s where Richard Coleman, though charming as fiancé, reveals himself to be old-fashioned, “ordinary,” even authoritarian as husband. Things aren’t going so well in Kitty and Richard Coleman’s marriage, though by appearances all’s fine: they’re a respectable couple in London’s middle-high society, live in a fine house, keep maid and cook, and remind readers of the upstairs family in, well, Upstairs, Downstairs. Chevalier’s enormous hit with Vermeer and the 17th century ( Girl With a Pearl Earring, 2000) is followed by a novel so familiar-the forces of change at 19th- century’s end put cracks in domestic life-that the hyperverisimilitude of its period-color seems almost done by number. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Chaos walking seriesAnother thing about this ship is that it is a generation ship, meaning that she was born, and grew up, on the ship. The suggestion is that if she doesn't contact them, then they will leave and go and look for another planet. The film is about this girl who survives this pod that lands on the planet and she has lost contact with the colony ship that is orbiting it. For instance, they suggest that the reason all of the women were killed was because of an alien race on the planet, but that sort of turns out not to be the case. At first it seems to be about a film where all of the women on the planet have died while the men have developed telepathic adbilities, however once you get to the middle of the film you suddenly realise that there is actually much more to the story than meets the eye. From the trailers this film looked pretty good, but upon watching it the film turned out to be pretty good in a much different way. 7/4/2023 0 Comments The trial franz kafka pagesAnd why? Because this literary coupis so transfixing that why is incidental and, by the end, doesn’t really matter. And though he is found guilty, and executed, he, and we, never find out. So, Josef K., the reader, and the narrator, do not know why he was arrested. Item #747 “…without having done anything wrong, he was arrested…” Franz Kafkas absurdist novel The Trial is set in an unnamed European town in the early twentieth century. The last auction sale was $7,500 for one in a repaired jacket (Sotheby’s, Sep. First and last few pages, the page edges and extreme marginsfoxed (the rest is ok), near fine in a dustjacket that is 1/8” short along the top (maybe miscut or maybe trimmed), faded to tan on the spine and with 2 darker tan spots, else very good, nice looking, never repaired, real as a heart attack, and priced to more than compensate for its failings. 1st edition in English, preceding Knopf’s American edition. The Trial (Der Process in Kafka’s original German-language text) was written in 1914-15 but, like much of Kafka’s work, remained unpublished until after his death. 7/4/2023 0 Comments The Kalarthri by H.M. ClarkeI knew, when I first started listening to it the main character would be young (eleven years old), which is fine. Overall it's an ok pleasant Audiobook that I'd recommend for young ages. She then stepped outside." I could swear that after listening to this book Kalena is now the name I've heard the most times in my life. Kalena then stepped outside." while it can be "Kalena woke up, stood up, thought where to go next and picked up her bad. What turned out to be really annoying for me was the bad editing and the immense overuse of the protagonist's name, Kalena, eg(not a part of the book, just demonstrating): "Kalena woke up. The story is pretty linear, easy going and as I mentioned targeted to a younger audience. Apparently she is more skilled than the other kids, being able to hear every's thoughts while also 5 years younger. The story follows a young girl, Kalena, from the Kalarthri race, who was taken from her family and bound to a boy from the race of Hatar a large birdlike beast, whom she can mindspeak with. Story 7.5/10 I'll just rate this as kids books when it comes to the story because for me that's what it is. Narration 8.5/10 The narration is ok, nothing wrong with it, nothing exceptional either, just speed it up a bit. I received this title for free in exchange for an unbiased review.
